Bowling for Brain ’11 is HUGE success for BIAAZ!

The Brain Injury Association of Arizona is one of those special organizations that knows how to help a family overcome the unimaginable affects of TBI, educate decision makers to change safety policies, and provide awareness and unwavering support to the community, all at the same time.  Every day, they inspire hope, strength, and the power of teamwork!

Last weekend, the BIAAZ held their 2nd Annual Bowl for Brain Injury event at four Brunswick bowling alleys across Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona.  Over 100 teams registered to bowl and collect sponsorships- many with a goal of over $1,000!

We (AdvisaCare) had a team in both Phoenix and Tucson this year and raised about $4,500 for the BIAAZ.  In Tucson, our team included a doctor and her son, PBA Hall-of-Famer Paul Colwell, a father and son, and Robert McQuoid, AdvisaCare Arizona Regional Manager.  In Phoenix, our team included our CEO, Kris Skogen and family, Tony Paul and family, and yours truly, Ashleigh Justice.

By the end of the day, the Brain Injury Association of Arizona was able to raise over $100k in gross sponsorships for valuable programs & services and for their annual camp, Kamp Kan Do.  We are very proud to be a part of such a great cause and we thank the BIAAZ for their continuing support of the TBI community!

myTEAM TRIUMPH Opens Arizona Chapter

Tucson, AZ (September 15, 2011) –myTEAM TRIUMPH, a national organization inspired by TEAM HOYT that enables… children, teens, adults and veterans with disabilities to ride along in athletic events,  has approved a southern Arizona chapter, according to Steve King, the president of myTEAM TRIUMPH-Southern Arizona.

The Southern Arizona chapter will have its inaugural run Sept. 17 as part of the Diamond Ventures El Tour  10K/5K Adventure Run & Walk Along the Rillito River.  This national designation enables the chapter to borrow ADA approved wheelchairs. King said the chapter has the ADA chairs for 10 “Captains” on loan from the national chapter for the race on Sept. 17. Each captain has three “Angels”, runners who volunteer to push the chairs in the race.

The captains range in age from three to 23 years old, King said.

The organization’s goal is to encourage other families with disabled athletes and hope to raise money for the purchase of at least ten ADA approved running wheelchairs, he said.  The cost of each chair ranges from $850 to $1250, depending on the weight of the rider.

“The need is great. There are at least 100 children in my son’s school who could “Captain” a team if we had the chairs. We have many runners who want to serve as our Angels but we need the chairs,” he said.

Advisacare kicks off first Get Active! Event

Kris Skogen (owner) and the rest of the AdvisaCare team wanted to do something special for the community. We wanted to help people with disabilities and their families break their routines, get out and have good time so we formed a crew of employee volunteers to help with fun activities.

Our inaugural Get Active! with AdvisaCare event was held at a

Whitecaps Game Aug 2011

Whitecaps game, the Grand Rapids, MI minor league baseball team, in the summer of 2011. We invited our patients and their friends, other patients from a nearby facility, and some families from within the community to share in a treasured American pastime. Even Ronald McDonald and Crash the River Rascal stopped by to say hi!

The feedback from our first Get Active! with AdvisaCare outing was great! One family said it was the most fun they’d had out together since their child had his accident! Another mom told us she was so happy to have the opportunity to bring the whole family out together. The day was full of smiles and everyone stayed until the fireworks were over.

We look forward to our next Get Active! event and hope to see you there! Check our calendar of events and sign up for our newsletter to see when the next events are coming up!
